If you are in the content creator space, then you probably already know it is not always easy. Filming, lighting, choosing the right outfit, getting the perfect shot…it can be extremely exhausting and let’s not get started on captions and hashtags. Instagram Reels have become one of the newest trends, and if you follow me, then you may be familiar with my ‘Get Dressed With Me’ Series which is also a trendy way to showcase an outfit. You can watch the latest one here.

I get a lot of questions on how I film these, so I posted an IGTV video to share the Behind The Scenes. This blog post is to simply walk you through the process step by step and to share the tools I use to get the job done.

The Camera

When I film any video content I use the Canon EOS M50 Mirrorless Camera. It films in 4k and great for vlogging. It’s also smaller and lightweight compared to DSLR cameras. I did purchase a different lens. I bought the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. It provides higher clarity, has autofocus, and affordable.

One thing I didn’t realize is that the lens is an EF Mount, and the camera is an EF-M mount so I had to buy a lens mount adapter. If you have a DSLR camera, then you shouldn’t need the adapter.

The Tripod

Amazon Tripod

A tripod seems minor but it’s important to have a good one. Amazon has several to choose from and I’ve been through several until I finally found one I like. This one goes up and down and has a wheel that you can turn to make it stand at 60 inches tall. You can also tilt it so the camera can come out. This helps me to get all the angles I need when filming. It comes with a camera mount, a phone mount, and a Bluetooth Remote, and a carrying case.

Behind The Scenes

Now that we’ve covered the tools you need, let’s discuss the process. If you’re using a Canon Camera that has Wifi or Bluetooth Capability, then you want to download the Canon Camera Connect App. You can download on iOS or Google Play. This app will connect your camera to your phone, and will allow for easy downloading. Also, it allows your phone to mirror what you camera is seeing. This is how I’m able to see what I’m recording. I find it easier than looking at the camera screen.

Next, once your camera is on your tripod, adjust the legs and tilt the camera to whatever details you are wanting to shoot. Whether it’s your pants, your blouse, shoes, or jewelry, tilt the camera and allow the lens to focus before you start. You can use the Canon app to start or stop whenever you choose.

Content creation tips

Since Instagram Reels only lasts up to 30 seconds, you don’t have to spend a lot of time on filming one item. For example, I spend about 3-4 seconds on each piece of clothing or accessory.

Once you stitch the video together, you can adjust the speed how you want. I normally like my videos at a slower pace so I naturally move slower.

For editing, I use a combination of Apps, iMovie, Videoshop, and Videoleap.

I hope this helped and can give you some idea for your content. If you have questions, my DMs and emails are always open! Happy Content Creating!
